| Home >> FAQ Finance | General Degree | International Students | Open Learning | Placements | Training and Professional Qualifications Finance How much does it cost to study with Oasis? The total yearly cost for studying at Oasis College is £4,835, which is split between the student and their placement. The student will be expected to pay £1,285 and the placement will pay £3,550. What about student loans? Providing you are eligible for a student loan, you can take out a tuition fee loan/grant to cover the costs of your fees. I'm worried about tuition fees and student debt - can you help me? If this is the case, talk to one of the staff and we may be able to point you in the direction of someone who could help you. What scholarships/bursaries do you offer to undergraduate students? We do not have the facility to offer scholarships or bursaries at Oasis College. Please check out your library reference section and consider approaching grant making bodies that may be able to assist you. Alternatively look at our student loans section. --------------------
What courses do you offer? We offer three degree courses in Youth Work and Ministry, Children’s Work and Ministry and Family Support Work and Ministry. You can find out more about them in the Undergraduate Courses section of the website. For Open Learning courses in Mentoring, Esteem and What Every Volunteer Youth worker should Know, see the Open Learning section of the website. How do I apply? Applications should be made through UCAS. For details of how to do this, look at www.oasiscollege.org/ApplyNow. How can I find out more? Open Days Open Days are held in both London and Durham centres. In London, the Open Days usually start at 9.00am with a time to meet with various people in the College. There is then a taster lecture with students followed by time to ask the students about the course to enable people to get a ‘feel’ for the College. There is also a presentation about Oasis College, the courses, and the processes involved in becoming a student. Before you leave there is an opportunity to meet staff and ask any questions that may have popped into your mind during the morning. Contact Details For further information please contact the National Training Coordinator, nicola.goncalves@oasisuk.org or phone 020 7921 4320 I want to study part-time. What are my options? Studying part-time is the best option for some people. This still requires a minimum commitment of 1 day in College per week and placements in addition to this which need to be negotiated. For example for the first year this may mean College on a Tuesday and the second year of study one day on a Wednesday. The placement may be 12 hours each week for the first year, or split if we can find a suitable placement into both years of 6 hours per week – however often many churches require more than 6 hours. It may be possible to work for up to 3 days per week, however this will mean that your time has to be managed very well to enable you to complete the course requirements from an academic and placement perspective as well as your work and possibly family commitments I do not have any experience with children and young people. What should I do? Apply for the course and we may ask you to gain experience before you gain a place on the course through a conditional offer. For some people this may be doing voluntary work during the summer before the course starts, for others it may mean deferring and gaining the appropriate experience before starting the course. Why do you want experience in youth and children’s work if that is what Oasis College is training us to do? The course requires that you work 12 hours per week in a main placement, which is a real situation. You are expected to work in a professional manner and have some experience of the type of situations you may encounter before hand to enable you work effectively within the team of the main placement. You will also be living in accommodation provided by your placement and this proves to be an intense time for those involved. For those who had had no experience there is added stress in learning further new skills and we feel this is not helpful to either the student or the placement. We therefore require that you have basic skills in working with young people which can be enhanced and further skills can be learned through your placement experience. I am a mature student – what do I do? I do not have the sufficient academic qualifications but have life skills and experience. If this is the case then apply through UCAS and we will take your experience into account. Please fill in your relevant experience as fully as possible in the section about you. What qualification will I receive once the course is completed? There are three exit options (full time is quoted below – part time will be double the length): Exit after one year – CertHE (Certificate of Higher Education) in Children’s, Youth and Family Support Work and Ministry. Exit after two years – DipHE (Diploma of Higher Education) in Children’s Work and Ministry, Youth Work and Ministry or Family Support Work and Ministry. Exit after three years – BA (Hons) in Children’s Work and Ministry, Youth Work and Ministry (this streams also allows JNC recognition) or Family Support Work and Ministry. How much time do I spend in college? During each term, students attend college for two days a week, spending another day in private study and the remainder of their time in placements and participating in activities for their own spiritual growth within the church. Students at Level 3 are expected to be able to manage their time fully themselves and much of their year is spent in self-directed study, with only one day a week of college attendance. --------------------
I am an international student and want to study at Oasis – what do I do? English Standard Required As English is used in learning, teaching and assessment at the College and we are accredited through Staffordshire University, you will not gain the full benefit from your degree award unless you have the appropriate standard of English. For this reason, in our entry criteria for international students we require an English language qualification, e.g. IELTS average of 6.0, TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer-based). Below is the full range of English Language qualifications that we accept. Please visit http://www.staffs.ac.uk/study_here/international/entry_requirements/index.jsp to clarify what qualifications in English are acceptable. If you are applying for the start of an undergraduate course please apply through UCAS. If you are applying for commencement in years 2 or 3 or at post-graduate level please download the form from the following address and it will be processed through Staffordshire University. http://www.staffs.ac.uk/assets/M124%20International%20App%20Form_tcm44-3287.pdf All applications are processed by Staffordshire University International Office. If you provide an address, they will email you once they have received your application, so that you know it has been received. The International Office Applications Team will then contact the Oasis College on your behalf to obtain a decision on your application. Offer letter issued You will receive an offer letter from the University. This may be conditional (asking you for additional evidence of qualifications) or unconditional (showing that we are satisfied with all the information that you have given us and you meet all of our requirements). Acceptance of offer In order to accept and secure your place at Staffordshire University you are required to pay a deposit. You can pay in different ways, and our finance leaflet will explain all the different methods. If you are a JPA sponsored Malaysian student or a student from a partner college, you are not required to pay a deposit, so you will need to return an offer acceptance form in order to have your place confirmed and to receive your visa support letter. If you have received offer letters for more than one course, you will be required to confirm your preferred choice by returning an acceptance form as well as paying the deposit, if required. Deposit payment For details of how to pay your deposit to Staffordshire University, take a look at their finance leaflet (PDF, Filesize: 3.51MB), which will give you all the available options. Visa support letter We will confirm receipt of your deposit (or acceptance form from JPA sponsored students, partner students and students who have selected a preferred course from the two offered) by sending you a visa support letter pack, which you will need to use when you apply for your visa. The letter details which course you intend to study, the course duration, the annual tuition fee, the deposit amount that you have paid (if applicable) and which campus you will study on. Visa application You need to apply for your visa in plenty of time. Visa offices are always very busy from June to September for semester 1 entry, and December and January for Semester 2 entry. This may impact on your ability to obtain a visa in time to start your course. Useful information can be found at Home Office, Ukvisas and The Council for International For Education. For further information please visit Staffordshire University International pages on the link http://www.staffs.ac.uk/study_here/international/ --------------------

I am interested in learning about What Every Volunteer Youth Worker Should Know – how does it work? What Every Volunteer Youth Worker Should Know (WEVYWSK) is a programme run by people who have experience in the field of youth work and have been trained to deliver the course and are associate trainers with Oasis. The charge for the course at present is approximately £75 per person and this entitles you to a book – presently on CD Rom – due to rewriting. The Associate trainers are responsible for all the organization of the courses and we have a list of possible trainers held here at Oasis College. Should you wish information about courses in your area, please contact the National Training Coordinator, nicola.goncalves@oasisuk.org or phone 020 7921 4320. From late 2009 the format of WEVYWSK will be changing. The newly updated and formatted course will be called The Knowledge 2.0 and we hope it will be launched at Youthwork the Conference. The course will be sold in a resource pack form for a specific training to a number of people which will include books and all the information required to enable anyone to deliver the course. For further information please contact the National Training Coordinator, nicola.goncalves@oasisuk.org or phone 020 7921 4320 --------------------
Can I work at my home church and study with Oasis College? Yes. Simply ask your church to put your name on the placement application form when they fill it in. I am a church interested in offering a placement – what do I do? Take a look at our placement section of the website, and download the document on the Further Information page to read more about what becoming a placement involves. For Further information on placements please contact the London Centre Administrator, Craig McCulloch via email (craig.mcculloch@oasisuk.org) or telephone (020 7921 4315). --------------------
My employer wants me to get some training. What can you offer me? We offer our undergraduate programmes on a part-time basis, which perhaps could be day release; however there is also an additional commitment of placements for these courses. We also offer short courses which require a commitment of 3 days over a month or 4 days over a month. These are reflective practice courses in: Esteem Sex and Relationships Education and Mentoring Training. There is a possibility of becoming a trainer with additional 1 day training. Please note at present these courses are not accredited, although we hope to see them accredited in the near future. How can I get professionally qualified? The JNC qualification is a professional qualification certified by the National Youth Agency and our Bachelor (Hons) in Youthwork and Ministry has been designed to fulfill the professional requirements during your placement on this course. Please note as of yet there are no professional qualifications in Children’s Work and Family Support Work awarded by agencies in England. |
