Course Title: Engaging in Communities
Module Code: AM75386-0 Credits: 15 Fee: £195.00
Module Leader: Claire Murphy Location: Oasis College, London
Status: Core to University Foundation Certificate and Diploma and available as stand-alone course through a Certificate of Credit
Mode of Delivery: This course takes 10-15 weeks to complete and requires attendance at three taught workshop days during this period.
Starting Dates: This course runs up to three times a year with starting dates in the Autumn (Sept-Dec.), Spring (Jan-Apr.) and Summer (May-Aug.). Courses are subject to a minimum number of students in order to run in any given teaching block.

Overview: This course will explore the content of voluntary activity in communities and its practical application. The module is structured to cover aspects of contemporary ideas of community life, current social policies that affect community action and the profiling of local communities in the UK. The module is designed for those who are currently engaged in voluntary activity and can complete a minimum of 40 hours supervised voluntary practice during the module. It will focus on the practical activity of volunteering and on reflection on the volunteering process, involving small scale research in to the characteristics of local communities and the identification of personal skills that can be used to enrich community life.
Assessment: Presentation 30%. Portfolio (1,000 words) 70%.
