Award Snapshot

The Graduate Diploma in Youth Work and Ministry prepares you for a professional career in work with young people. It offers a learning experience that combines the theory and practice of youth work with Christian ministry, equipping you to work with increasing effectiveness alongside local churches and the wider community. The Graduate Diploma is both an academic and professional qualification with JNC recognition as awarded by the National Youth Agency

Who is this award for?

The Graduate Diploma in Youth Work and Ministry is designed for people who wish to pursue a vocation in work with young people alongside Christian ministry. The programme caters for students progressing from a qualification at level 5 or higher. This makes it an ideal route for students progressing from a Foundation Degree or Honours Degree from any UK University. The Graduate Diploma is al open to mature applicants with at least three years existing youth work experience (preferably in an employed or significant voluntary capacity) and are seeking a direct route to professional qualification within the sector.

What is included in the award?

The courses will stretch you to develop a higher level of knowledge and understanding of youth work practice and ministry. You will be guided through an academic learning programme that engages with the psychological, sociological and theological frameworks used to inform our view of young people, youth work and ministry. Weekly taught modules will address subjects such as:

  • Youth work and professional practice
  • Christian mission and ministry
  • Young people’s learning, growth and spiritual development
  • The role of the church in community action and social change
  • Building quality youth work
  • Young people and risky behaviour
  • Managing emotions and relationships

Are there fieldwork or placement requirements?

Yes. The teaching programme is complimented by at least 18 hours of fieldwork each week. Most of this time will be in your main placement, usually a local church or Christian agency that is either your employer or contributes to your accommodation and living expenses while on placement. Fieldwork experience will also be supplemented by a regular alternative community placement and a residential/holiday based placement at some point during the programme. For further information on how we arrange a fieldwork placement download our Arranging a Fieldwork Placement Booklet.

What are the entry Requirements?

The programme is designed for students who have already demonstrated their academic ability through at least a level 5 qualification; or equivalent work-based experience. Each student is assessed on their own merit and we take in to consideration these factors:

  • Relevant practical experience of work with young people
  • References from voluntary agencies, your church or employers
  • Recent studies and qualifications: Students need to demonstrate they can work at Honours Degree Level. We prefer students to have gained a foundation degree or Honours degree however, mature and experienced students may be accepted based on merit or the completion of an access course.
  • Academic ability: At our discretion, students may be asked to complete an entry assignment to demonstrate academic ability.
  • Applicants must also demonstrate they are ‘safe to practice’ and meet Independent Safeguarding Authority standards.

What is the mode of study?

You can study this award full or part-time. The award takes one academic year to complete, full-time, and two years part-time. You will be required to attend College one day each week during the teaching semesters (26 weeks during the year) and complete the required fieldwork hours in an approved fieldwork placement(s).
